“2002 Show Car” / Registry # 1
Owner : Bryan Lancelot
Year/Model : 1973 BMW 2002tii (VIN # : 2763852)
About this restoration : Bryan had to sell his 2002 when in college to pay the last semester tuition. He made a vow to his girlfriend, now wife, that someday he would have the finest 2002 in existence. We found him the donor car, completely dismanteled her and rebuilt her to factory stock with all available options. The finished car won First Place in the Concours class at BMW CCA’s 2002 Oktoberfest in Keystone, Colorado, just North of its’ Denver home.

“2002 Street Car” / Registry # 2
Owner : Bryan Lancelot
Year/Model : 1973 BMW 2002tii (VIN # : 2763858)
About this restoration : After we were underway with Bryan’s show car, he decided he wanted a street example that would include all the great aftermarket upgrades that have been developed over the past 25 years. Again we hunted for the donor car and found another Cylon (Gold) car that was six serial numbers later than his show car. The two were “brother and sister” as they went down the assembly line. This car was also shown at BMW CCA’s 2002 Oktoberfest where it won First Place in the Super Clean class. It shares garage space with its’ sister car in Denver, Colorado.

“2002 Tii”
Owner : Paul
Year/Model : 1973 2002 Tii (VIN # : 2763761)
About this restoration : Paul bought his car, now called “Baby B” because it was so small in July 2005, from a guy in his neighborhood. A few years earlier the neighbor had brought the car from California to Chicago with 170,000 miles on her. The car was in fair condition, the engine having been rebuilt once before and it had a few rust spots in all the usually spots. There were no past service or work records and the speedo had been broken for awhile.

Paul has liked BMWs since he was a kid and when he saw this ’73, 2002tii it was love at first sight. Throughout the first summer of his ownership, Paul began talking with various sources about restoring his car to original factory specs. When he brought it to us we gave it a complete evaluation and determined the engine and most of the mechanicals to be sound but the body and interior needed help. Paul had a meager budget so we approached his project based on his budget and his needs. He wanted new paint first so we stripped the body, repaired all the bad metal and repainted in the same factory color using the Glasurit system, the same paint manufacture that BMW used for these 02’s. We replaced some of the bright work, straightened and re-chromed the bumpers and sourced correct wheels and tires so the car looked like factory new on the outside.

On the interior, we repaired the cracks in the dash and then recovered it with original factory material. We replaced the headliner, carpet and door panels. The seats were left alone as they were not bad and the budget did not allow for a complete interior.

On the mechanical side, parts were replaced on an as needed basis but with an eye toward practicality. The radiator was replaced with a larger unit to keep the engine cool in Chicago traffic, aftermarket anti roll bars were added and we changed out the front struts and added a choke to aid in better starting.

Here’s what Paul says, “The car is an ongoing project for me. Although a lot of work was done at two different times, there is always maintenance that I insist upon having done. The car looks and drives great and gets lots of attention wherever I go. I have done a few small road trips in the car and I prefer to drive it on lightly traveled roads away from suburban areas. Nevertheless, it does get driven on weekends during the summer months to exercise it, but it is stored during the winter. At some point in the next few years we will rebuild the motor and re-upholster the seats. I enjoy the car and cannot imagine selling it; at this point, it has become part of my soul.”

“Anthrazit” / Registry # 10
Owner : Tom
Year/Model : 1975 BMW 2002 (VIN # : 2363060)
About this restoration : Tom is a fellow who has moved around a lot. His job has taken him and his family to many different cities and always, the 02 has moved with them. We went to Atlanta to pick up Tom’s car as he wanted to re-make this long time friend. We made a Stage II racing motor, new paint in its’ original Anthrazit Metallic color and a custom interior. Tom moved again during the project so we delivered her to St. Paul, Minnesota.

**UPDATE**

Several weeks ago we trailered our 1975 BMW 2002 as one stage (one of many) of our relocation back to St. Paul, MN.
My wife Kris had heard about the St. Paul German CARFEST occurring the following week and happened to mention it to my oldest son Matt.
Matt decided to enter our car in the event on a whim as we have never shown the car before.
Taking it out of storage and cleaning it the best he could, he proudly parked it at the end of a long line of BMW’s on display.
It was a great show- Porsches, Mercedes Benz, BMWs – both old and new- the largest showing of German cars in the thirteen years that the St. Paul German car clubs have been putting on the show.
During the show Matt became convinced that “we were going to get some sort of award” based on the large number of people that gathered around our car and their comments. Kris and I did the best we could to prepare him to be disappointed- but Matt was utterly convinced we would win.
Well, guess what, we took First Place! Attached please find a photo of our car, and a photo of myself and Matt- who is the one in the picture holding a plaque that will never leave his possession

“Blanche” / Registry # 5
Owner : Jay
Year/Model : 1972 BMW 2002tii (VIN # : 2761466)
About this restoration : Jay bought this tii many years ago. When the engine quite running, he and a buddy rebuilt it on the kitchen table and surprise, it runs. Then, thinking they were pretty good at this stuff, they decided to do a complete restoration. They pulled the engine and sent the body off to another buddy for paint. College, marraige and a career followed with the tii sitting in a garage for 15 years. Jays’ wife finally said sell it, junk it or finish the car. Jay called us and we went to New Philadelphia, Ohio to pick up the shell and all its’ parts. We were able to save that paint job by giving it a good buffing. We rebuilt that kitchen table motor, the suspension and drive line, installed a 5-speed tranny and cleaned up the interior. Jay now has a fine collectable tii to go with his beautiful Black E28 M5.

“Fjord” / Registry # 6
Owner : Jeff
Year/Model : 1973 BMW 2002tii (VIN # : 2764485)
About this restoration : Jeff bought this little gem at the insistence of his younger brother Craig, (see “Inka”) another owner who has had his car over 25 years and wanted her to serve him another 25 years. We stripped out the shell but found rust in critical places that made the shell unusable. Locating a replacement shell at a junk yard in the dry southwest, we re-assembled Jeffs’ gem to better than new. Both Jeff’s car and his brother Craig’s were restored in tandem. Here is another fine example that also runs the streets of Cleveland.
